In the city of Buenos Aires we can find numerous emblematic places, symbols of the Argentine Nation. Around the historical Plaza de Mayo (‘Mayo Square’) the foundational core of the city can be traced, as originally designed by Juan de Garay in 1580.
The Casa Rosada (‘The Pink House’), seat of the national executive power, was born an ancient fortress, built by the end of 1590, and underwent several modifications until the presidency of D. F. Sarmiento, who granted it a large part of its current physiognomy and color.
Opposite the square, we shall find the Cabildo (‘Town Council’), former seat of power and justice management of the city. Almost during its entire existance, it experienced constant changes, until in 1879 it was remodelled as seat of the Courts of Justice. It was finally restored in 1940 by architect Buschiazzo, with the aim of returning to the roots of its collonial design of the late 18th century.
The Manzana de las Luces (‘Square of Enlightment’) offers a short trip embracing viceroyalty houses with their 18th century tunnels, where you can also visit San Ignacio Church and the Nacional School.
The current Cathedral building is the sixth one to be erected in the lot, designed by Juan de Garay in 1850. The present-day façade was designed in 1822 by Próspero Catelin of France, with a neoclassical portico and a similar outline to that of a Greek temple, which makes it very different from any other Catholic church.
La Recoleta Cemetery, where many of the most important Argentine illustrious poeple are interred, displays a refined architecture and outstanding sculptural pieces. A genuine journey throughout our history and art positions this cemetery among the most remarkable and widely visited necropolises in the world.
